VIP 722 With The Dish DVR Network

After spending a week with the Dish DVR Network Duo DVR VIP 722, it was pretty simple to see why it won the C-Net Editor’s Choice award. Actually, it was the VIP 622 that won the award. The the only difference in the VIP 722 over the 622 is that it has more storage. The VIP 722 is, as far as I can see, the most flexible of all DVR systems in its price range.

We have 2 televisions in the condo, one is HD and the other is SD. Before the 622 (Now VIP 722) came out, we needed a receiver for each TV. Not so with the full-featured DVR Receiver. We have the capability to have one DVR and two remotes and this receiver handles both quite nicely.

Because I upgraded to the VIP 722 from the Dish DVR 622, model, I found very little difference between the two. The 622 was silver and the VIP 722 is black. In addition the 722 has more storage allowance than the 622 had. That was about it. And really, that was the only reason we upgraded.

The benefits of these 2 models are huge though. The opportunity to have more than one type of TV (HD and SD) was really key. Also the fact that you can record on two different sets without having to pay for an additional receiver not only saves me money each month, but I didn’t have to dust an addition piece of equipment!

The one thing I didn’t like so well was that we weren’t able to watch one television show while recording another on the same TV. So we just record from the second TV after we’ve programmed that into our primary. After that being said, it’s really not that big of a deal.

I’m not a technical person so, to me, the menu was daunting at first. In fact, I don’t know if it’s that I’m not technical or just the fact that I felt overwhelmed. That was with the 622 model. I’ve aced it since then. My brother had no problem at all with the menu. Guess I should have figured it was just my technophobia. Sigh.

Probably what I love more than anything is the ability to skip ahead 30-seconds during commercials. I’m sure there’s a pretty accurate number out there but to me it seems that an hour-long show has at least 35 minutes in commercials that I don’t watch. So being able to fast past the intruding advertisement is a real bonus. Just the fact that I can pause and playback was enough for me to choose the 622 model, still a feature in the Dish DVR Network VIP 722. I probably use that single feature (and the 2 different types of TV benefit) more than anything else on the entire DVR.

My son likes to watch the picture in picture. He keeps up with whatever game he’s watching with other shows at the same time. Personally I don’t know how he does it, but he does.

The recording capability is huge too. I can record 55 hours on the HD TV. And in the other room which has the SD TV, we can enjoy up to 350 hours of recordings. Overall, I’m very pleased with the VIP 722 and, after using both DirecTV and Comcast, the customer service I receive from DISH Network is head and shoulders above the others.
